Obama administration will push immigration reform in 2009

The While House announced on April 9 that the Obama Administration will push for comprehensive immigration reform this year, including looking for a way for the 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. to become legalized.  There has been speculation that the administration might sideline immigration reform because of the current economic downturn.  This announced by a senior administration official confirmed the administration's intention to make good Obama's campaign promises.  President Obama is expected to speak in May on this issue and working groups will be meeting in the summer to create a concrete plan.
